1. Line editing -This type of editing centres around the reorientation of the following:
– Repetition of words and phrases.
– Incomplete and imprecise sentences.
– When two or more independent clauses (complete sentences) are misconnected, i.e., run-on sentences.
– Words or sentences increasing monotony.
Line editing is done to increase the flow and clarity of the write-up. For example, if two sentences are to be included one after the other, and both are equally important, but they do not fit together easily, the editor plays around with formation until they flow fluently.
2.Copy Edit -This type of editing centres around but is not limited to the following domains:
– Punctuation and grammar
– Spelling distinctions (UK English versus US English)
– Addition/Substitution of capital letters, addition/subtraction of hyphens, italicizing of words.
– When numerals must be used and when words must be used to denote numbers
There are different styles available such as APA, MLA, Chicago etc. that are to be selected based on the publisher’s requirements.
